Picuris Pueblo Sues to Halt Mine Expansion

On June 14, 1999, the Pueblo of Picuris filed suit against Franklin Industrial Minerals and the New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division (MMD) to challenge a proposed 25-fold expansion of Franklin's mica mine. The Pueblo is located directly south of Taos in the Río Pueblo/Río Embudo watershed; the mine lies on land long used by the tribe for traditional activities.

Amigos Bravos supports the Picuris' efforts to curtail the mine's expansion which would pose a long-term threat to the Río Pueblo/Río Embudo watershed.

The lawsuit alleges that MMD violated the New Mexico Mining Act by approving Franklin's Closeout and Reclamation Plan despite numerous and obvious problems.
