Send an Email to Senator Bingaman urging him to oppose the Barrasso/Heller Dirty Water Rider.
Please take the time to send an email to Senator Bingaman urging him to oppose a dirty water amendment to the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bill (HR 2354) that is being proposed by Senators Barrasso (R-WY) and Heller (R-NV). This amendment would prohibit the US Army Corps of Engineers from taking steps to restore historic Clean Water Act protections to many New Mexico waters such as smaller streams and rivers that do not flow year round, playa lakes, and waters in New Mexcio's closed basins (which make up 20% of New Mexico).
Taos Sewage Permit - Tell EPA to Draft a More Protective Discharge Permit to Protect the Rio Pueblo de Taos. Comment Deadline: November 14th
Please take the time to send an email to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) telling them to make their draft discharge permit for the Town of Taos' Wastewater Treatment Plant more protective of the Rio Pueblo de Taos. The draft permit has an incorrect discharge outfall location that allows them to use the dilution of the Rio Pueblo de Taos to discharge at higher pollutant levels. Please take the time to let EPA know that: 1. they should use the correct outfall location that does not allow this to happen; 2. they should use Taos Pueblo water qualtiy standards in calculating permit limits; 3. more monitoring is needed; and 4. the public deserves a public meeting to ask questions about and to communicate concerns with the proposed permit.
Take Action today by telling the US Forest Service to protect our Forests and Rivers from Roads and Off Road Vehicle (ORV) Abuse!
Please click here to join the fight to keep our forests quiet and protect clean water by sending an email to the Forest Service in support of Alternative 3 of their Travel Management Plan Environmental Assessment. Their proposed alternative (Alternative 1) would add 15 miles of new roads, 12 new stream crossings, and would contribute 53 additional tons of sediment to rivers and streams in the Forest.
If you would like to review the Environmental Assessment and associated maps click here.
Tell the Obama Administration to Protect New Mexico's Rivers
Tell the Obama Administration by August 1st that Clean Water Act protections should apply to New Mexico's streams, wetlands and playa lakes. Click here to submit comments.
A couple of bad Supreme Court decisions drastically weakened clean water protections across the nation and now Congress is trying to further open the floodgates of pollution. Because of the ephemeral, intermittent and isolated nature of many of New Mexico's rivers and streams, water quality protections for New Mexico waters are especially vulnerable.
Please take the time to click here and submit comments in support of clean water.
Thank you.
OTHER WAYS YOU CAN TAKE ACTION:
≈Stay informed, sign up for e-mail action alerts on our home page, become a fan of our Facebook page, call us at 575-758-3874
≈ Contact the Congressional Delegation (Bingaman, Udall, Lujan, and Heinrich) and let them know how important clean water is to you, and ask them to provide more funding for cleanup and restoration efforts at Los Alamos National Laboratory and for community water quality monitoring efforts
≈ Sign up to volunteer at Amigos Bravos – We organize summer river clean up and river restoration efforts, river otter and water quality monitoring opportunities (we provide training), and we occasionally need help with research and in-house mailings.
≈ Help further our mission by becoming a steward of your own watershed – let us know about issues important to you, and if you have questions about how to protect and restore your river.
If you are not a member, please become one now [click here] -- by doing so you will be adding your voice to a growing number of families protecting New Mexico's rivers and the communities that depend on them.
