Communications Manager
Position Summary
Position Title: Communications Manager
Reports To: Executive Director
Location: Taos, NM (Hybrid within New Mexico considered)
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Salary Range: Competitive for NM nonprofit sector, typically $65,000–$75,000
depending on experience
The Communications Manager leads the development and implementation of a
coordinated, proactive communications strategy that elevates Amigos Bravos’ mission,
strengthens its statewide visibility, and amplifies the voices of the communities we
serve.
This position leads organizational storytelling, public messaging, brand development,
coalition communications, and digital engagement. The Communications Manager
works closely with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, project leads, and coalition
partners to ensure communications are strategic, consistent, and aligned with
organizational priorities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Organizational Communications Strategy
● Lead execution of the Amigos Bravos Strategic Communications Plan.
● Establish and maintain internal communications processes, calendars,
templates, and workflows.
● Develop annual communications goals and metrics tied to organizational
priorities.
● Ensure all content aligns with messaging pillars and branding standards.
● Mentor program staff on storytelling, messaging, and field-based content
collection.
● Facilitate regular communications meetings and program-specific planning
sessions.
2. Projects & Organizational Support
● Design and help write fact sheets and donor-facing communications and lead
creation and writing of an annual report.
● Work with project staff to prepare, format, and send action alerts.
● Collaborate with other staff to integrate storytelling into donor materials and
campaigns
● Support grant writing with narrative and impact content as needed.
3. Storytelling & Content Leadership
● Manage creation of a shared success story repository and build staff capacity to
contribute to it.
● Shape long-term narrative strategies connecting local work to statewide policy.
● Oversee production of blogs, newsletters, visuals, social media content, and
impact stories.
● Partner with program staff to translate technical policy content into accessible
public messaging.
4. Digital Strategy & Audience Growth
● Plan and implement digital engagement strategies, especially to reach younger,
rural, and underserved audiences.
● Oversee social media campaigns tied to programs, policies, and storytelling.
● Manage and update organizational website and digital presence.
● Track analytics and adjust strategy to increase reach and engagement.
5. Media Relations & Brand Visibility
● Develop and implement earned media strategies, including press outreach, op-
ed campaigns, and media cultivation.
● Serve as a primary media contact or prepare spokespersons as needed.
● Build relationships with key reporters and local press across the state.
● Ensure consistent branding across all public-facing materials and coalition
spaces.
6. Coalition Communications Leadership
● Identify and implement processes for coalition communications.
● Support coalition partners with messaging tools, shared templates, and
coordination processes.
● Ensure Amigos Bravos’ brand and priorities are represented clearly within
coalition work.
Prioritized Qualifications
● 4+ years of experience in communications, journalism, public policy
communications, nonprofit communications, or related fields.
● Demonstrated success developing and implementing strategic communications
plans.
● Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills; ability to translate complex policy
issues into accessible language.

● Commitment to environmental justice, water protection, and New Mexico
communities.
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience supervising contractors.
● Familiarity with New Mexico’s water issues, environmental landscape, or policy
processes.
● Spanish proficiency (highly valued).
● Graphic design, photography, or video skills.
● Experience developing or implementing brand guidelines.

Full-time salaried positions at Amigos Bravos have a baseline expectation of 32-40
hours per week, but evening and weekend work may be required from time to time
depending on projects, activities, and events.

Internships Opportunities
The internship program at Amigos Bravos provides an opportunity for high school and college students to obtain hands-on experience in water policy, science-based research, and restoration work.
The goals of the internship will be determined by mutual agreement between the student, the sponsoring professor (if applicable), and the Amigos Bravos Internship Coordinator. Those goals will be outlined within the Internship Contract, which additionally outlines the number of hours per week that the student agrees to work, a general outline of the hours and days per week to be worked, and other obligations incurred by each of the signing parties as a component of the internship.
The spirit of the Amigos Bravos internship program is one of mutual benefit. The intern expects to learn new tasks and acquire new capabilities, and Amigos Bravos expects to receive competent assistance on a viable research project. It is our hope that the experience gained by the student will be invaluable in future career pursuits. Prior to the termination of the internship, the student will be expected to present a report to Amigos Bravos staff describing some aspect of the student’s intern experience.
